A new analysis from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), drawing on nearly 25,000 corporate disclosures from 2024, reveals that companies investing in climate action are seeing substantial financial gains. According to the 2025 Disclosure Dividend report, firms can expect an average return of 7:1 for every dollar spent on tackling physical climate risks, with some achieving returns as high as 21:1.
For mid-sized companies, the median potential opportunity was estimated at $33.1 million per company, compared with average costs of just $4.6 million to capture those benefits. This strong return on investment reflects the value of integrating environmental strategies into core business planning.
The financial advantages of climate action are already being realized. In 2024, 12% of reporting companies unlocked a combined $4.4 trillion in environmental opportunity value. Despite these successes, CDP estimates that there is still $13.2 trillion in untapped value across the businesses that disclosed data.
Geographically, the gains vary significantly. Companies in Japan and Canada reported the highest median opportunities, $73 million and $72 million per company, respectively, while firms in the U.S. and China identified more modest opportunities of $15 million and $10 million per company.
CDP’s leadership stresses that transparency and data-driven decision-making are central to unlocking these opportunities. The report argues that climate disclosure is not simply a compliance exercise, but a business tool that can drive growth, enhance resilience, and improve competitiveness.
With climate-related damages projected to cost the global economy $38 trillion annually by 2050, the message is clear: companies that proactively address climate risks are better positioned to protect value and seize emerging opportunities. For businesses, climate action is no longer just a sustainability goal; it’s a strategic investment with proven returns.
