Oman has announced the establishment of a “Net Zero Centre” to spearhead its efforts toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The initiative underscores the country’s commitment to advancing its carbon neutral strategy and aligns with global ESG priorities.
The newly formed centre will develop and implement updated strategies to support energy efficiency projects and provide technical assistance to both government and private sectors. Minister of Energy and Minerals Salim Nasser Al Aufi emphasized the centre’s role in supervising net-zero plans and accelerating the execution of initiatives across all sectors.
Key responsibilities of the Net Zero Centre include adopting and transferring cutting-edge international practices and technologies, fostering scientific research and innovation, and enhancing national capabilities. These efforts aim to position Oman as a leader in sustainable development while addressing climate challenges.
The centre will also handle critical functions related to carbon management. This includes managing certification requests for carbon, hydrogen, and low-carbon products, as well as overseeing applications and issuing certificates in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Environment Authority.
Furthermore, the center will regulate the registration and approval of carbon credit trading requests, ensuring compliance with international carbon market frameworks. By creating a streamlined approach to carbon trading and certification, Oman seeks to incentivize sustainable practices and attract investments aligned with its carbon neutral strategy.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Oman’s sustainability journey, showcasing its proactive approach to tackling climate change while fostering economic growth. The establishment of the Net Zero Centre signals the Sultanate’s dedication to integrating ESG principles into its national policies, paving the way for a greener and more resilient future.
