sales@senecaesg.comPoland is poised to establish a definitive end date for coal-powered energy, signaling a departure from the previous government’s stance on climate change, as reported by Reuters on January 15. The recent October 2023 elections ushered in a new government, replacing eight years of Law and Justice (PiS) party rule. Secretary of State for Climate Urszula Zielinska announced the government’s commitment to increasing environmental efforts, including the formulation of a phase-out date for coal power. With coal currently contributing around 70% of Poland’s power, the move reflects a significant shift, especially considering the prior administration’s agreement with trade unions to continue coal mining until 2049. Scientists emphasize the need for substantial emissions reductions from coal within this decade to avert severe climate change, aligning with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres’ call for OECD countries to phase out coal by 2030.
Zielinska, appointed in December, affirmed that the new government is reviewing Poland’s climate and energy plans, with a commitment to supporting affected workers and industries during the transition. While the secretary initially expressed openness to the EU’s target of reducing emissions by 90% by 2040, later statements hinted at a nuanced position, emphasizing the need for negotiations and a clear declaration on emission reduction targets. The softened tone contrasts with Poland’s past resistance to certain environmental measures within the European Union, including legal challenges against EU climate policies. Despite the evolving stance, Zielinska highlighted the government’s dedication to addressing the societal impact of climate initiatives and emphasized the need for a detailed proposal from the European Commission before finalizing Poland’s position on the 2040 climate target.
