Singapore-based environmental solution provider KinRoss will collaborate with its Mongolian partner Clean BotanEco to rejuvenate degraded soil in Mongolia, as reported by Strait Times on November 4. The partnership involves an agreement outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU). KinRoss intends to employ its liquid microbial culture for composting manure and plant waste in black soil, with the resulting compost containing 18% to 23% humic acid, an element crucial for retaining soil moisture. This project not only aims to enhance soil fertility and agricultural productivity but also allows KinRoss to generate carbon credits through nature-based solutions.

Mongolia, facing food security challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced cultivated land, is combating desertification. In 2021, the Mongolian government initiated a tree planting program, targeting 1 billion trees planted nationwide by 2030. This effort seeks to increase forest coverage to at least 9% from the current 7.9% and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 600,000 tons. Soil restoration plays a pivotal role in this initiative, offering a dual benefit of promoting forest regeneration and bolstering agricultural yields. This venture follows a June 2023 MoU signed by the governments of Singapore and Mongolia, emphasizing their joint commitment to carbon credit projects. KinRoss’s involvement aligns with the broader climate objectives of both nations while addressing critical environmental and agricultural challenges in Mongolia.
