South Korea is advancing its ESG and carbon neutral strategy with new developments in carbon-free energy initiatives. On February 12, South Korea Development held the 9th KOSPO Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee (Tangreen Committee) at the Seoul Finance Center. The meeting brought together management and external advisors to discuss energy transition strategies for thermal power plants through emerging carbon-free technologies.

Under the leadership of President Kim Joon-dong, the committee appointed experts in climate policy, renewable energy, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) as new advisors. These experts explored viable solutions for achieving carbon neutrality while ensuring energy security and economic viability.

Professor Kwon Yi-kyun of Gongju National University emphasized that CCS is a critical option for achieving national carbon neutrality, despite uncertainties in technology and global energy policies. He highlighted the need for a flexible carbon neutral implementation strategy that incorporates innovative solutions such as hydrogen-based power generation.

The committee’s discussions focused on key ESG topics, including domestic and international climate and energy policy trends, technological advancements, and global energy market shifts. Advisory groups also evaluated how thermal power plants can evolve into carbon-free energy sources, determining the optimal mix of technology selection and government support to drive decarbonization efforts.

President Kim stressed the importance of proactively adapting to the evolving global energy landscape and positioning South Korea’s energy sector for sustainable growth. He reaffirmed KOSPO’s commitment to refining its carbon neutral strategy, leveraging CCS, and integrating cutting-edge decarbonization technologies. By doing so, thermal power plants can maintain stability as an economical energy source while contributing to South Korea’s broader carbon neutrality goals.

As ESG considerations and carbon neutrality continue to shape the energy industry, KOSPO’s initiatives highlight the growing importance of sustainable strategies in transitioning to a low-carbon future.
