Sustainability Strategies in the Pet Food Industry

As the pet food industry continues to grow, manufacturers are increasingly recognizing the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into their operations. According to Allison Reser, Director of Sustainability & Innovation at the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC), sustainable sourcing and production are not just trends but essential long-term strategies that can secure the future of the industry.

Reser emphasizes that the pet food sector heavily relies on natural resources such as farms, crops, and animal agriculture. Therefore, adopting sustainable and regenerative practices is crucial for maintaining these resources for future generations. This approach aligns with the broader ESG goals of minimizing environmental impact while ensuring business resilience.

A key element of a successful sustainability strategy is conducting a robust materiality assessment. This helps companies identify areas where they can make the most significant impact, such as reducing waste and greenhouse gases by utilizing animal byproducts like organ meat. These practices not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also meet the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products.

In the context of evolving regulatory landscapes, more jurisdictions are implementing climate-related disclosure regulations, such as the CSRD and SEC requirements. Reser notes that companies that proactively address these regulatory changes will reduce their transition risks and enhance their position in the market.

Beyond compliance, sustainability investments can yield tangible financial returns in the form of energy savings, improved customer loyalty, better employee retention, and increased supply chain resilience. However, the ultimate goal is “futureproofing”—ensuring that businesses remain relevant and successful in a world where sustainability is the norm.

By embedding ESG principles into their operations today, pet food manufacturers are not only meeting current demands but also safeguarding their long-term success in a rapidly changing market.
