A new report from the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) reveals that only 30% of the world’s largest corporate emitters have set climate targets aligned with the 1.5°C target for 2050. This is a notable increase from just 7% in 2020, but many companies still fall short of having credible transition plans. The “State of Transition Report 2024” analyzed over 1,000 public companies, providing insights into their Carbon Performance and Management Quality.
The report found that industries such as diversified mining (50%) and steel (46%) are leading the charge, while food producers (8%) and oil & gas (6%) lag behind. Regionally, European and Japanese companies show the highest alignment with climate goals, while 82% of Chinese companies are either misaligned or lack sufficient data for evaluation.
In terms of Management Quality, 57% of companies are at Level 3, recognizing climate risks but lacking comprehensive strategies. None of the companies met the highest standards (Level 5), indicating a clear gap in actionable business-wide decarbonization plans.
This report underscores the need for stronger ESG strategies and improved sustainability reporting. Simon Dietz, Research Director at TPI, highlighted the influence of regulatory environments on corporate climate efforts, stressing the importance of collaboration between businesses, investors, and policymakers.
As sustainability reporting becomes more critical, investors are urged to push for more ambitious climate action to address the systemic risks posed by climate change.
