Transport for London (TfL) has achieved a significant milestone in its carbon neutral strategy, with its emissions reduction targets officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation confirms that TfL’s near and long-term goals align with the 1.5°C global warming threshold of the Paris Agreement, marking a major step forward in ESG leadership and climate action.

TfL’s strategy includes a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, primarily by transitioning to zero-emission vehicles and sourcing renewable electricity. Additionally, it aims to cut Scope 3 emissions—those from contracted services, construction, and supply chains—by 45% by 2030 and 90% by 2040. Its ultimate target is achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

These efforts are already visible across London’s transport system. Over 1,900 of London’s 9,000 buses are now zero emission, supporting 3,000 UK jobs and fueling the green economy. TfL is also decarbonising its infrastructure by installing LED lighting, implementing energy efficiency measures, and exploring solar power through its Power Purchase Agreement, with a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.

To reduce carbon emissions from construction, TfL signed the Construction Leadership Council’s Five Client Carbon Commitments. This includes eliminating the most carbon-intensive materials, setting phase-out dates for fossil fuels, and working towards emission-free deliveries by 2030.

TfL’s validation by SBTi underscores its ESG commitment and showcases its carbon neutral strategy in action. According to Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Mete Coban, the initiative supports London’s broader goal of becoming a greener, more sustainable city, positioning TfL as a model for urban transit systems worldwide striving to meet climate goals.
