UK Study Urges Unified Carbon Accounting to Boost Net Zero Efforts

A new UK study highlights the need for a unified carbon accounting system, as the current proliferation of methodologies is hindering global efforts to achieve Net Zero. Conducted by Bath University and published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the research points to inconsistencies across existing standards, such as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, ISO, BSI, and the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These discrepancies create confusion, increase costs for businesses, and leave room for manipulation by bad actors.

Professor Marcelle McManus, director of Bath University’s Sustainable Energy Systems Research Centre, emphasized the urgency of the situation. She noted that the climate emergency demands consistent, transparent carbon accounting to allow industries to decarbonize effectively. A fragmented approach complicates efforts for businesses trying to reduce emissions and creates loopholes for those looking to avoid accountability.

The study outlines several key issues, including challenges in accounting for global supply chains, variations in regional approaches, and the complexities of measuring carbon in circular economies. In addition, non-interoperable data formats and a lack of unified oversight further complicate the process. The researchers call for a new system that is transparent, verifiable, and adaptable to future needs, such as carbon storage technologies.

The report, backed by the UKRI Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC), urges prioritizing global emission reductions and ensuring a just transition over individual company or country interests.
