Apple , Nike , and several prominent US companies have announced the launch of the Clean Energy Procurement Academy, an initiative aimed at providing skills and resources to enable companies to adopt clean energy solutions and decarbonize their supply chains, as reported by ESG Today on October 30. The Academy was initiated by Apple and Nike with the support of Google-funded Clean Energy Buyers Institute (CEBI), joined by companies including Amazon , Meta , PepsiCo , and REI Co-op. The Academy will help trainees boost supply chain companies’ capacity to invest in renewable energy, enhance synergy among different industries to address shared supply chain climate challenges, encourage supply chain companies to elevate their renewable energy commitments, and establish renewable energy buying communities in critical manufacturing regions.
This launch of the Academy represents major corporations’ increased focus on reducing supply chain emissions. Supply chains are responsible for more than 50% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it imperative to reduce emissions in this sector. Apple, a frontrunner in incorporating clean energy into its supply chain, will share the expertise with participating companies of the Academy. Since 2019, Apple has increased the use of renewable energy across its supply chain by five times. Over 85% of its suppliers have committed to using renewable energy for all Apple-related production by 2030.
