Bangladesh's RMG Sector Embraces ESG with GRI Standards for Global Competitiveness

The Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh, contributing $47 billion in annual exports, is embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles through the adoption of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. A recent roundtable organized by Swiss contact and The Daily Star highlighted the importance of ESG compliance in sustaining the industry’s global competitiveness, particularly as Bangladesh prepares for its LDC graduation in 2026.

Stakeholders emphasized the role of ESG in enhancing brand reputation, ensuring market access, and meeting legal frameworks such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Sustainability reporting, once optional, is now a necessity in global markets like the EU, US, and UK. These regulations demand transparent actions in climate reporting, diversity, supply chain accountability, and the circular economy.

While the RMG sector boasts 230 LEED-certified factories, challenges persist in scaling ESG adoption across SMEs. Industry leaders and policymakers stressed the need for skill development, soft loans, and capacity-building initiatives to foster compliance. Partnerships, such as BGMEA’s Responsible Business Hub and PACT, have already benefited hundreds of factories, promoting sustainability and accountability.

Speakers also highlighted the complexities of the global apparel supply chain, underscoring the urgency for traceability, risk-based approaches, and collaborative efforts to meet international ESG requirements. Initiatives like Better Work and academic training programs aim to address knowledge gaps and promote compliance among smaller factories.

As Bangladesh transitions to a middle-income economy, the RMG sector must adopt a carbon-neutral strategy, embracing water reuse, zero emissions, and circularity. By aligning with GRI standards and focusing on ESG priorities, the sector not only secures global market access but also positions itself as a leader in sustainable garment manufacturing.
