Cambodia and Finland have formalized a strategic partnership to enhance environmental protection and hazardous waste management, with a strong focus on recycling lead acid batteries. This collaboration aligns with both nations’ commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and advancing sustainable waste management practices. 

During a high-level meeting, Cambodia’s Minister of Environment, HE Dr. Eang Sophallet, and Finland’s Ambassador to Cambodia, HE Kristiina Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos, discussed key initiatives to promote sustainability and climate resilience. Minister Sophallet emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to environmental sustainability through national campaigns such as “Today I Do Not Use Plastic Bags” and “Clean Cambodia, Khmer Can Do It.” These efforts reinforce the government’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. 

Ambassador Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos praised Cambodia’s proactive environmental initiatives and reiterated Finland’s support in sharing expertise on waste management, lead acid battery recycling, and green infrastructure development. She highlighted Finland’s commitment to capacity building, knowledge transfer, and public awareness campaigns to drive environmental responsibility. 

The partnership aims to explore innovative waste management technologies and transform urban areas into carbon-neutral zones. Additionally, both governments are set to promote green investments that align with global ESG standards, fostering a sustainable economic transition in Cambodia. 

By leveraging Finland’s advanced waste management expertise and Cambodia’s growing commitment to environmental sustainability, this collaboration is expected to drive significant progress in reducing hazardous waste, promoting circular economy practices, and enhancing climate resilience. The initiative strengthens Cambodia’s position in regional sustainability efforts while reinforcing its long-term carbon-neutral strategy.
