Liverpool City Council is set to roll out an ambitious new Recycling and Waste Strategy to address the city’s low recycling rates and help the region achieve its sustainability goals. With the current domestic recycling rate at just 17.9%, well below the national average of 43.4%, the strategy outlines key actions to enhance recycling, reduce waste, and promote eco-friendly practices. One of the strategy’s key elements is the introduction of a weekly, separate food waste collection starting in 2026, which will contribute to Liverpool’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030.
The new plan focuses on reducing household waste and increasing recycling rates to bring them in line with other local authorities across the UK. Research shows that around two-thirds of the 135,000 tons of domestic waste sent for incineration annually could be recycled instead. By improving waste management, the city aims to reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal, saving costs and promoting sustainability.
Currently, waste disposal costs Liverpool £27.7 million per year, but by improving recycling rates and cutting down on waste sent for incineration, the city could save up to £1.6 million annually. The introduction of carbon-neutral bin lorries and more efficient waste collection routes will also help reduce the city’s carbon emissions, which currently account for 9% of total CO2 emissions.
The strategy includes six clear objectives: reducing purple bin waste, increasing recyclable materials collection, promoting positive waste behaviors, and optimizing environmental performance. The city is already implementing solar bins, underground refuse bins, and other green technologies to improve waste management.
Additionally, an eight-week public engagement period will provide residents with the necessary tools and information to adopt sustainable practices. By working together, Liverpool aims to create a cleaner, greener city and move closer to its carbon-neutral strategy while promoting ESG principles.
