Trump Reverses Ban on Massive New York Offshore Wind Project

The Trump administration has reversed its April 2025 halt on Empire Wind, a major offshore wind project off the coast of New York, signaling renewed support for ESG goals and a carbon neutral strategy—despite initial skepticism about its approval process.

Empire Wind 1, developed by Equinor, is expected to generate 810 MW of renewable energy, enough to power 500,000 homes and become the first offshore wind project to connect to the New York City grid. With commercial operation slated for 2027, the project represents a cornerstone of New York’s clean energy transition and economic revitalization.

The reversal follows intense negotiations between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and President Trump’s administration after the Department of the Interior paused the project for further environmental review. Governor Hochul hailed the decision as a win for the state’s clean energy future and labor market, stating:

“I fought to save clean energy jobs in New York — and we got it done.”

The $5 billion project, which already secured over $3 billion in financing, is expected to create 1,500 union jobs and support local economies. Equinor CEO Anders Opedal welcomed the green light, reiterating the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions while fostering regional growth.

However, the decision also appears to be part of a broader political compromise. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum indicated the reversal was linked to Governor Hochul’s willingness to consider new natural gas pipeline development to enhance energy affordability in the Northeast.

The Empire Wind project’s reinstatement marks a significant moment for ESG investment, demonstrating the ongoing push for renewable infrastructure and carbon neutrality, even amid political shifts. It reflects how green energy can align with both economic and strategic energy goals in the evolving U.S. landscape.
