UK Power Networks, the largest electricity distribution network operator in the UK, has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2040, with its targets validated by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This validation aligns the company’s long-term climate goals with the SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard, requiring a 90% reduction in emissions across all scopes, including Scope 3 (indirect) emissions. 

To meet this goal, UK Power Networks has established a 2019 baseline and introduced interim targets to reduce Scope 1 (operational) and Scope 2 (power-related) emissions by 53%, and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2029. These measures are part of the company’s efforts to support the global transition to net-zero, especially as electricity becomes central to powering transport and home heating. 

UK Power Networks is the first UK-based network operator to align with the SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard. The initiative, launched during the 2021 COP26 climate summit, has seen over 3,500 companies commit to setting science-based climate targets. However, achieving alignment with the Standard has been challenging for some businesses, especially when it comes to measuring and reducing Scope 3 emissions. 

UK Power Networks’ Director of Health, Safety, Sustainability, and Connections, Mark Adolphus, emphasized the importance of immediate action in response to the latest climate science, which has been described as a “code red for humanity.” The company remains focused on reducing its own emissions and supporting wider societal shifts towards a sustainable, low-carbon future.
