Belgium has officially transposed the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) into national law, aligning its corporate reporting requirements with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The move enhances transparency, ensuring Belgian companies provide consistent, comparable, and reliable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information critical for EU-wide investor decision-making.
Previously governed by the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), Belgian companies had less stringent reporting obligations, primarily targeting public-interest entities. The CSRD now expands these requirements, mandating detailed ESG disclosures, including data on climate impact, workforce diversity, human rights, and anti-corruption efforts. Reports must comply with the ESRS framework, emphasizing verifiability and comparability.
The directive requires companies to assess and update their data collection and reporting systems, calling for cross-departmental coordination to meet the new standards. Phased implementation begins with companies already subject to NFRD requirements, which must report for fiscal years starting on or after January 1, 2024. Other companies will have additional time to comply based on size and specific criteria.
Non-compliance could result in regulatory fines, audits, and reputational risks, underscoring the importance of timely preparation. The CSRD strengthens Belgium’s commitment to its carbon-neutral strategy by compelling companies to disclose their environmental impacts and sustainability risks.
This legislation positions Belgium at the forefront of EU-wide efforts to standardize ESG reporting, ensuring companies remain competitive in a market increasingly driven by sustainability principles. Once published in the Belgian Official Gazette, the law will officially take effect, setting a new benchmark for corporate accountability and ESG transparency.
Belgium’s adoption of the CSRD highlights its dedication to fostering sustainable business practices and supporting global carbon neutrality goals, providing a robust framework for addressing today’s pressing environmental and social challenges.
