Google has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Power Capital Renewable Energy to supply its offices and data center in Ireland with solar power, as reported by ESG Today on September 5. This marks Google’s first long-term renewable energy deal in Ireland. Under the agreement, Google will secure 58 megawatts (MW) of grid capacity from the Tullabeg Solar Farm, which has a peak capacity of 81.62MW. Once operational, the project is expected to help Google achieve a goal of sourcing 60% of its energy from carbon-free sources for its offices and data centers in Ireland by 2025. Power Capital Renewable Energy has a substantial solar project pipeline totaling 1.2 gigawatts (GW) and has also signed a PPA with Microsoft .

Google has stated that this new PPA is in line with its 2020 commitment to power all of its operations with 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. This ambitious goal involves matching each hour of its electricity consumption with carbon-free electricity sources on every grid where the company operates. This recent agreement is part of a series of PPAs announced by Google as it strives to achieve its 24/7 carbon-free energy goal. These include a 189 MW PPA announced last month with Apex Clean Energy, a 15-year 150 MW PPA in April with Ørsted , and a 12-year 100 MW PPA announced in November with ENGIE . Google is also actively working on the commercialization of next-generation clean energy technologies and smart solutions for managing electricity demand as part of its commitment to a sustainable energy future.
