Indonesia has unveiled its ambitious USD20bn investment plan for energy transition, slated to roll out around November 20, as reported by Reuters on October 6. This plan is an extension of Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) introduced in 2022. The funds, set to be utilized over the next three to five years, are aimed at expediting the retirement of the nation’s coal plants and fostering the development of renewable energy sources. Initially planned for launch in August, the JETP faced delays due to challenges such as aligning financing with potential transition projects and Indonesia’s significant reliance on coal for electricity generation.
Before the official plan launch, Indonesia will collaborate with the International Partners Group (IPG), including countries like the US and Japan, alongside development banks and private lenders. Discussions will focus on agreeing upon investment content, with funding details to be addressed subsequently. Under the JETP, Indonesia has committed to capping carbon emissions from the power sector at 290 million tons by 2030. This initiative also signifies a shift in Indonesia’s renewable energy policy, targeting renewable sources to contribute one-third of the country’s power production by 2030. Presently, over half of Indonesia’s electricity capacity is derived from coal. Despite the substantial USD20bn pledged through the JETP, the International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that Indonesia would require a total of USD163.5bn for its energy transition endeavors by 2030. This figure encompasses the development of renewable energy technology, grid expansion, and storage needs.
