The Dutch Port of Rotterdam, the largest seaport in Europe, plans to construct the world’s first large-scale factory for Battolyser Systems to meet the country’s surging demand for hydrogen energy and electricity, as reported by Reuters on November 28. Battolyser Systems is a Dutch firm that develops and manufactures integrated batteries and electrolyzers (“Battolyser”) that can store electricity and generate hydrogen from surplus electricity. Specifically, the Battolyser can be a producer of low-cost hydrogen when electricity is cheap, and a seller of its stored electricity when the price is high. The Port of Rotterdam hopes the factory will help decarbonize its supply chain and provide low-cost renewable energy to Northwest Europe.
The Port of Rotterdam aims to be an international hub for sustainable energy, especially hydrogen energy. Earlier this month, companies including Port of Rotterdam were in talks with the Chilean Ministry of Energy and ProChile to discuss the potential to develop a green hydrogen supply chain to exchange green energy between Chile and Europe. During the COP27 summit which wrapped up earlier this month, the Dutch government and Oman inked a deal to set up green hydrogen transportation facilities, as part of the Netherlands’ effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49% by 2030.
