Apple has made a groundbreaking stride in its commitment to sustainability with the launch of its Series 9 Watch, marking the tech giant’s first carbon-neutral product, as reported by TechCrunch on September 12. The company’s approach to achieving this milestone involves several key initiatives. Firstly, Apple has transitioned to using 100% clean electricity for all Watch manufacturing, combining renewable sources with nuclear and hydropower, and investing in renewable energy projects to offset the device’s lifetime electricity consumption. Moreover, Apple has significantly increased the use of recycled materials in the Series 9 Watch, from aluminum cases to tin, gold, copper, and tungsten for various components, as well as cobalt for the battery.

The company has also revamped its packaging, adopting 100% fiber-based materials, reducing its carbon footprint by 78%. To completely eliminate the remaining emissions, Apple will invest in carbon offsets, such as credits from forests and wetlands. Additionally, Apple’s commitment extends to its broader product lineup, including the elimination of leather across all product lines, the introduction of new sustainable materials like FineWoven, and the advancement of recycled content in its devices.
