India is advancing its carbon neutrality goals in the aviation sector by introducing a new Carbon Accounting and Reporting Framework for airports. This framework is part of the nation’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions in civil aviation, with a focus on both domestic and international airports.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has prioritized carbon neutrality by requiring airport operators to map and reduce carbon emissions in a phased approach. The initiative extends to the construction of greenfield airports, where carbon-neutral practices are being integrated from the beginning.
Over the past decade, India has built 12 new greenfield airports, aligning with the government’s broader sustainability goals. Since 2014, 73 airports have adopted 100% green energy, demonstrating significant progress toward eco-friendly aviation.
India’s airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, have already earned Level 4+ accreditation from the Airports International Council (ACI) for achieving carbon neutral status. This recognition highlights the country’s commitment to carbon accounting and sustainable operations, in line with global standards.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia previously set ambitious targets for Indian airports to fully adopt green energy by 2023 and achieve net zero emissions by 2030. With continuous knowledge-sharing sessions and the establishment of new frameworks, India is well on its way to building a carbon-neutral aviation sector, solidifying its leadership in ESG and sustainability reporting.
This push for sustainability underscores India’s dedication to achieving its carbon neutral strategy, positioning its airports as global leaders in eco-friendly operations.
