GAIL (India) Limited [GAIL:IN], India’s largest gas producer, has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions from its operations by 2040, as reported by Reuters on August 26. According to GAIL Chairman Manoj Jain, the company’s net-zero aim is in line with India’s vision to achieve net zero by 2070. By 2040, the company intends to slash its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to zero and cut its Scope 3 emissions by 40%. Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are generated from an organization’s own operations, while Scope 3 are indirect emissions that occur in an organization’s value chain.
GAIL is ramping up natural gas supply and branching out in renewable energy production to fulfill its net-zero pledge. The company is adding nearly 5,000 kilometers of gas transportation pipeline to its network of 14,500 km of truck lines across the country. Moreover, it introduced hydrogen-blended natural gas to a city gas network in Indore. To cut its carbon footprints, GAIL also vowed to develop three gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Boosting the natural gas supply aligns with the Indian government’s goal of raising the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% in 2030 from 6% at present. According to India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, the country will continue to rely on hydrocarbons to meet its growing energy demand in the foreseeable future.
