Malaysian electricity utility firm Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) , has entered into collaboration with the stated-owned power supplier of Laos, Electricite Du Laos (EDL), to advance cross-border renewable energy (RE) originating from Laos, as reported by TechNode on August 7. The two entities have formalized their cooperation through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which outlines their joint efforts in exploring investment opportunities and securing power purchase agreements for renewable power projects in Laos. In addition, the collaboration will involve an assessment of viability of importing renewable power from Laos through initiatives like the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia Power Integration Project or other viable arrangements.
TNB stated that this initiative aims to bolster the interconnectivity of power grids within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). By establishing regional power grids that link Laos with other ASEAN member nations, these countries can tap into Laos’ abundant hydropower resources to fulfill their commitments to achieving net-zero emissions. According to TNB, the projected figure for renewable energy exports from Laos to Malaysia is anticipated to reach 200 megawatts (MW) in 2025 with a trade value of USD101m, potentially growing to 1,000MW beyond 2030 with a trade value of USD500m. Last year, the total electricity export value of Laos hit USD1.76bn, rising by 7.5% compared to 2021.
