Poland is launching its first direct air capture (DAC) facility in the city of Kielce, marking a significant milestone in the country’s decarbonization efforts. Developed in partnership with Warsaw-based clean-tech company Oraquel S.A., the pilot plant will be powered entirely by solar energy and is designed to remove 500 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere annually.
The facility uses a modular, scalable design with replaceable filter systems that allow for efficient CO₂ capture, transport, and storage. Its solar-powered operation ensures the carbon removal process is emissions-free, setting a strong example for sustainable infrastructure in the region.
Kielce’s mayor, Agata Wojda, highlighted the project’s dual purpose: advancing climate technology and educating the local community. The plant is expected to serve as both a functional carbon removal solution and a hands-on learning hub, fostering public awareness about environmental adaptation and sustainability.
Though modest in size, the DAC pilot signals a strategic move for Poland within the broader European climate agenda. It positions the country to explore next-generation carbon removal technologies while involving local stakeholders. Plans are already being discussed to scale this initiative across other cities in Poland, potentially creating a national network of urban DAC hubs.
This project not only emphasizes the role of municipalities in climate action but also illustrates how innovation can emerge even in regions with strong historical ties to fossil fuels.
