APEC member economies gathered in Gyeongju to advance a unified approach to ocean sustainability, laying the groundwork for the upcoming APEC Ocean-Related Ministerial Meeting (AOMM) in Busan. Against the backdrop of rising sea levels, marine pollution, and illegal fishing, the 24th APEC Ocean and Fisheries Working Group (OFWG) emphasized regional collaboration to ensure a resilient and sustainable marine sector.

Jinhee Seo, lead shepherd of the OFWG, underscored the urgency of collective action. “We have reached a critical juncture in addressing shared challenges and shaping the future direction of the OFWG,” she stated. Aligning APEC’s principles with sustainable ocean policies will strengthen regional cooperation and economic prosperity.

Deputy Minister Hong Lae-Hyoung of Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries highlighted the transboundary nature of marine challenges. “The ocean knows no borders, and no single economy can address these issues alone,” he said. The OFWG has made strides in combating illegal fishing, reducing marine pollution, and supporting small-scale fisheries. The group also focuses on harnessing marine data, fostering inclusivity in fisheries, and integrating technology for better ocean management.

As this year’s APEC host, Korea is prioritizing ocean governance with the theme “Navigating Our Blue Future: Connection, Innovation, and Prosperity.” The upcoming ministerial meeting, the first in a decade, aims to drive technological innovation and policy integration for marine sustainability.

Advancements in satellite monitoring, AI-driven ocean management, and sustainable fisheries practices will be central to APEC’s long-term strategy. The meeting will also address the role of small-scale fishers and women in fisheries, ensuring equitable participation in the blue economy.

As APEC economies prepare for Busan, the commitment to marine conservation, economic resilience, and ESG-driven policies will shape the region’s approach to sustainable ocean governance and a carbon-neutral maritime sector.
