Spanish utility Iberdrola SA [IBE:SM] has purchased Autonomous Energy, an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) provider in Australia’s green energy sector, as reported by PV Tech on December 17. The acquisition will make Iberdrola’s Australian arm a ‘one-stop shop’ of renewable energy solutions, according to the Spanish firm. Reportedly, Autonomous Energy has installed over 100 photovoltaic-related (PV) projects in Australia, including rooftop PV, ground-mount solar power, and battery energy storage. Citing Autonomous Energy CEO, Matthew Linney, the company’s expertise in behind-the-meter technologies could be combined with Iberdrola’s growing assets of renewables, thus offering a set of innovative green energy products with lower energy costs to Australian customers.
Iberdrola has been expanding its clean energy portfolio in Australia since it purchased a 98.25% equity in renewables developer Infigen Energy [IFN:AU] in October 2020 and renamed the latter as Iberdrola Australia. As of now, Iberdrola Australia has seven operational wind farms with a total capacity of over 670 megawatts (MW), together with a wind-and-solar power plant of 1,000 MW. The Spanish utility plans to invest USD183bn to boost its total installed capacities of renewables to 93 gigawatts (GW), tripling from the current level. Citing Iberdrola CEO, Ignacio Galán, the group sees Australia as a key growth market for clean energy, as the country aims to raise the share of renewable energy in the power mix from 21% in 2019 to 48% in 2030.
