London, Aug. 4 – Lloyds Bank has launched a Voluntary Carbon and Nature Markets (VCNM) practice within its Business and Commercial Banking unit to help corporate clients navigate the rapidly evolving carbon credit landscape and nature-based solutions.
The new practice forms part of Lloyds’ Sustainability & Client Advisory division, established in 2021, which now advises more than 1,000 of the bank’s largest customers on embedding environmental strategies across their operations. Co-led by veteran sustainable-finance specialists Emily Martin and Gabriella Carden, the VCNM team will identify high-integrity carbon-offset opportunities, integrate nature-based initiatives into climate roadmaps, and ensure alignment with science-based net-zero targets.
“With deep expertise in sustainable finance, Emily and Gaby will enable our clients to engage effectively in voluntary carbon and nature markets – a growing pillar of the UK’s clean-growth strategy,” said Hannah Simons, Head of Sustainability at Lloyds Corporate Markets.
The move responds to mounting demand for credible, verifiable carbon offsets and intensifying regulatory and stakeholder scrutiny on corporate net-zero commitments. Lloyds aims to bolster transparency and due diligence in the voluntary carbon market – tackling concerns over greenwashing and inconsistent standards.
As the UK considers expanding its domestic carbon-market mechanisms, Lloyds’ new VCNM practice underscores the financial sector’s pivotal role in scaling up climate finance, restoring natural ecosystems, and driving robust, science-backed pathways to net-zero.
