Clean energy developer Solarig has announced a plan to build a new factory for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Spain, as reported by ESG Today on April 4. With an expected investment of EUR780m (USD847m), the plant would be built in Parque Empresarial del Medio Ambiente (PEMA) in Soria, Spain. It combines two technological routes for SAF production, including the Gas-to-Liquid (GtL) approach that converts local agricultural and livestock waste into biomethane and the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) method that combines biogenic CO2 with renewable hydrogen. The new factory is expected to come into operation in 2028, with a projected production capacity of 60,000 tons of SAF per year.
Solarig boasts the new factory as a pioneering projectthat adopts a fully circular approach to produce SAF, with all the processes in the plant powered by renewable energy. Specifically, the project will incorporate fully dedicated renewable assets including a 370-megawatt (MW) solar power plant, a 50 MW wind farm, and a battery storage with a 100 MWh capacity. It will facilitate the circularity and use of local renewable resources, along with biogas from agricultural and livestock waste. From these processes, the project is expected to capture and utilize 140,000 tons of CO2 per year, aiming to avoid 170,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.
