South Korea and Poland signed an agreement to develop a private nuclear power plant in Poland on October 31, as reported by the Korea Economic Daily. Per the agreement, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), Poland’s state-run power company Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), and private firm Zespol Elektrowni Patnow-Adamov-Konin (ZE PAK) will jointly build a nuclear power plant in the city of Patnow in central Poland. The power plant will consist of two or four power units, with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts (GW) each. Poland hopes to increase its energy independence with the construction of a new nuclear power plant. South Korea has also reportedly promised to transfer the technology to Poland.
Before signing the deal with KHNP, the Polish government selected US company Westinghouse Electric, owned by Brookfield Business Partners , for the country’s first nuclear power plant project on October 28. The nuclear power plant projects mark a major step forward for the Polish Nuclear Power Program, which aims to build three nuclear power plants with six reactors by the mid-2040s. Amid the Russia-Ukraine War, European countries, including Poland, are facing surging energy prices. Nuclear power is a key part of Poland’s plan to be independent of Russian energy and provide local households with clean energy at a stable price.
