The UK government has unveiled a £63 million investment to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, aiming to make EV ownership more affordable and accessible. The funding supports the country’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 and accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation.

A major focus of this plan is a £25 million fund to help local councils install cross-pavement EV charging solutions. This initiative targets households without driveways, such as flats and terraced homes, allowing residents to charge electric vehicles at home by using affordable residential electricity. Drivers can save up to £1,500 annually, making EVs a more cost-effective alternative to petrol or diesel cars.

The government prioritizes public sector electrification, allocating £8 million to support the NHS in England. The plan will install over 1,200 EV charge points at more than 200 NHS facilities to power electric ambulances and medical fleet vehicles. This transition will lower fuel and maintenance costs, enabling the NHS to reinvest savings into patient care.

The investment also includes £30 million in EV fleet and depot charging grants to support the electrification of commercial vehicles, including vans, coaches, and HGVs. By easing the financial burden on businesses, the government aims to encourage wider adoption of electric logistics across the UK’s transportation sector.

To enhance driver confidence and support long-distance EV travel, the plan also includes updated signage for public charging stations on major A-roads. With over 82,000 public EV chargers currently installed and projections reaching 100,000 by 2030, better visibility will make it easier for drivers to locate and access charging points.

Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, emphasized that the initiative is about more than just infrastructure. It’s a step toward a cleaner, fairer future where every household and business can benefit from cheaper, greener electric transport.

This £63 million boost to EV infrastructure represents a pivotal move in the UK’s electric vehicle strategy, cutting costs, improving access, and powering a national shift toward low-emission mobility.
