China has launched a new, comprehensive Green Finance Endorsed Project Catalogue, which will take effect on October 1, 2025. This unified taxonomy aims to streamline the identification and funding of environmentally sustainable projects across the country’s financial markets. Developed by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), the National Financial Regulatory Administration, and the China Securities Regulatory Commission, the new framework consolidates previous standards for green bonds and loans.
The updated taxonomy broadens the scope of eligible green activities beyond traditional sectors like energy and environmental protection. It now includes areas such as energy conservation, carbon reduction, resource recycling, and the low-carbon transformation of major industrial sectors. In a significant shift, new categories like “green trade” and “green consumption” have been introduced, allowing for a more inclusive approach to sustainable finance that encompasses both production and consumer-level environmental impact.
This move aligns with China’s ambitious environmental goals, including its pledge to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. By providing a clearer framework for sustainable investments, the new taxonomy is expected to attract more capital flows into green projects and support the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
As the global demand for sustainable investments continues to grow, China’s updated green finance taxonomy positions it as a key player in the international green finance market. The unified standards are expected to facilitate cross-border investments and boost the credibility of China’s green financial products, making them more attractive to global investors.
The new Green Finance Taxonomy is set to become a cornerstone of the nation’s sustainable development, providing much-needed clarity and credibility to green projects while advancing its environmental and economic goals.
