Microsoft’s Taiwan unit has formed the Taiwan ICT Sustainability Green Team to help local firms reduce carbon emissions, as reported by Microsoft’s website on June 24. In addition to Microsoft, the alliance comprises Foxconn , AU Optronics , Delta Electronics , and many software startups and consulting organizations. At the announcement of the Green Team alliance, Flora Chen, COO of Microsoft’s Taiwan unit, urged Taiwanese manufacturers to achieve sustainability with transparent carbon footprints if they want to secure their positions in global supply chains. Chen highlighted that Microsoft has created a sustainability management platform to assist businesses in calculating and recording environmental footprints in the manufacturing process.

Taiwan has set a path to attain carbon neutrality by 2050. To speed the energy transition of its electronics sector, Taiwan is encouraging enterprises to join RE100, a worldwide renewable energy initiative for corporates to utilize 100% green energy in their operations and supply chains by 2050. In response, major ICT companies in Taiwan are embracing the sustainable transition. For example, Foxconn has pledged to lower emissions by 21% from 2020 levels by 2025, then reduce emissions by 63% by 2035, before achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. As one of Apple’s key suppliers, Foxconn is obligated to transition to renewable energy sources and reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing plants to comply with Apple’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions in its entire supply chain by 2030.
