General Motors (GM) is intensifying its sustainability strategy, focusing on the supply chain to achieve significant emissions reductions and uphold ethical standards. Central to this initiative is GM’s Supplier Pledge, which asks Tier I suppliers to commit to carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and to achieve an EcoVadis score of at least 50 by 2025 in areas such as labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. By the end of 2023, 71% of GM’s direct and logistics suppliers had signed this pledge.

GM has also introduced the Supplier Sustainability Goals Framework to enhance sustainability efforts among Tier I suppliers, including key indirect and logistic suppliers. This framework categorizes supplier engagement into four levels: Compliance, Commitment, Growth, and Leadership, aiming to drive increased sustainability across the supply chain. GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra emphasizes that sustainability is not just good policy but also good business.

To assess supply performance and risk, GM uses the EcoVadis platform, which evaluates suppliers’ management systems on the environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. By the end of 2023, 88% of GM’s direct and logistics suppliers had enrolled in EcoVadis, achieving an average score of 52 out of 100. Additionally, GM participates in the CDP Supply Chain Initiative to collaborate with suppliers on mitigating environmental impacts, with high participation rates among key suppliers.

In the logistics domain, GM leverages operations to enhance supply chain sustainability. The company encourages logistics suppliers to join the EPA’s SmartWay Partnership, resulting in increased participation and strategic route designs to reduce CO2 emissions.

GM’s commitment to a sustainable future is underscored by its 2023 sustainability report, which outlines efforts to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, enhance supply chain sustainability, and support a renewable energy-powered grid. This comprehensive ESG approach highlights GM’s dedication to integrating sustainability into its business practices for a zero-emissions future.
