Indonesia has blocked access to websites operated by search engine Yahoo, payment company Paypal , and several gaming platforms such as Steam, Dota2, Counter-Strike, and EpicGames because they did not adhere to local licensing regulations, as reported by Nikkei Asia on July 30. Indonesia has required all domestic and foreign businesses providing online services in the nation to be registered since the launch of new regulation in November 2021. Registration may allow Indonesian authorities to request data of specific users from these platforms and remove any content that they deem unlawful or disruptive of public order within 24 hours.

Indonesia has been tightening the governance of internet service providers. As early as 2008, Indonesia established a law enabling the state to manage electronic information. In 2019, the nation published a rule mandating internet enterprises to register, then formally debuted an online registration system in August 2021. On July 21 of this year, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced penalties against internet service providers operating in the country without completing official registration. As of August 2022, 8276 Internet enterprises have already registered, including 8,069 domestic and 207 foreign businesses.
