U.S. Implements Changes as ESG Awareness Falters in Boardrooms

A new PwC survey reveals a decline in focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues in U.S. corporate boardrooms. Only 47% of directors now include ESG as part of their regular agenda, a drop from previous years. Despite this trend, key ESG topics like carbon emissions and climate change remain in focus, with 67% and 60% of boards discussing these issues, respectively. However, just 7% of directors equate ESG with sustainability, underscoring the confusion surrounding these terms.

The survey highlights a significant gap in understanding ESG at the board level, particularly among smaller companies. Only 42% of directors believe ESG is consistently understood within their boards. Larger companies are more likely to recognize the connection between ESG and company performance, with 32% of directors agreeing that ESG directly impacts the bottom line.

The lack of clarity on ESG matters extends to challenges in preparing for mandatory ESG disclosures. Only 57% of directors feel their boards are ready for these disclosures, and just 56% are confident in their companies’ climate-related capital allocation strategies. This indicates the need for a more robust carbon-neutral strategy to address both regulatory requirements and market expectations.

Despite these challenges, PwC emphasizes the importance of integrating ESG and sustainability efforts into long-term strategic planning. Directors must move beyond terminology and focus on managing risks and identifying opportunities that align with sustainable value creation. A clear carbon-neutral strategy and understanding of ESG are essential for businesses to thrive in an increasingly complex landscape.
