Greece has unveiled plans for its inaugural offshore wind farm, a strategic move to bolster renewable energy sources and diminish reliance on fossil fuels, as reported by Reuters on October 31. The Ministry of Environment and Energy, in conjunction with the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA), has released a draft program outlining the development of offshore wind in the country. The plan identifies 25 potential development zones in the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean seas, with the majority of these areas suitable for the implementation of floating offshore wind projects.  Under this initiative, approval for installing offshore wind farms will be granted to ten out of the 25 identified zones by 2032. These approved sites are anticipated to contribute a total capacity of approximately 4.9 gigawatts (GW) to Greece’s renewable energy portfolio.

Greece’s decision to embrace offshore wind power is underscored by its recent experiences, including the devastating climate-induced wildfires witnessed during the summer. In response, the country is steering away from fossil fuels. Theodore Skylakakis, Greece’s Energy and Environment Minister, emphasized the national importance of developing offshore wind, citing its potential to enhance energy independence and facilitate opportunities for green energy exports. In 2022, Greece derived over 50% of its power from onshore wind, solar, and hydro sources, with the remainder generated from natural gas, coal, and oil. As part of its sustainable energy vision, Greece aims to establish at least 2 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030, equivalent to one-tenth of its existing onshore wind capacity. According to estimates by the Hellenic Wind Energy Association, achieving this 2GW target will necessitate investments exceeding EUR6nb , reflecting the country’s commitment to advancing its renewable energy sector.
