Poland’s climate minister, Anna Moskwa, announced on Monday that Poland intends to challenge the European Union’s regulations that aim to prohibit the sale of fossil fuel cars throughout the EU by 2035, as reported by Reuters on June 12. Moskwa stated that the country will appeal to the top EU court within a few days. Earlier this year, the EU approved a set of regulations known as the Fit for 55 package, which includes measures to establish a carbon market and reduce emissions from buildings and transportation. As part of these regulations, carbon emissions from passenger cars and vans should be eliminated by 2035. Poland has consistently opposed these proposals and voted against them, claiming that they were not adequately evaluated in terms of their market and social impact. Moskwa expressed hope that other countries would join Poland in its legal challenge, and she mentioned that the motion will be submitted in the upcoming days.
Poland’s opposition to the EU’s ban on fossil fuel cars reflects its heavy reliance on coal and fossil fuels as crucial components of its energy sector. This makes the country particularly sensitive to regulations that aim to phase out vehicles powered by such fuels. While Poland has been the most vocal opponent, it is not the only member state expressing concerns over the proposed ban. The broader debate within the EU revolves around the economic impact on the automotive industry, potential job losses, and the need for a more comprehensive analysis of the social and market consequences. Despite these reservations, it is important to note that Poland is also committed to addressing climate change and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. The country has set renewable energy targets and undertaken initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
