The latest edition of the maritime emissions guide offers an in-depth look at current and future regulations impacting the shipping industry, with a special focus on the tanker sector. Key updates include a new chapter on the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which clarifies its application to ships operating in and out of the EU—a topic that has caused significant confusion among maritime operators.

Another notable addition is the exploration of the relationship between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and underwater radiated noise. The guide highlights how measures to reduce GHG emissions often lead to a decrease in underwater noise, demonstrating a dual benefit of environmental strategies.

The updated guide also features a comprehensive appendix with approximately 100 methods for reducing both GHG emissions and underwater radiated noise, reflecting the latest developments and best practices in the field. All content has been thoroughly reviewed and updated to ensure accuracy amidst the rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Chris Waddington, Technical Director at ICS, emphasized the importance of these updates, particularly the new chapter on EU ETS. “This edition addresses one of the most pressing topics in maritime regulation today, offering much-needed clarity on its implications for global shipping,” Waddington stated. He also praised the guide’s innovative approach to linking GHG and underwater noise reduction, noting its potential to address both emissions and noise pollution concerns.

The ICS has announced an upcoming book dedicated solely to underwater radiated noise, further underscoring its commitment to advancing maritime environmental sustainability. This new guide is an essential resource for navigating the complex landscape of maritime emissions and regulatory requirements.
