Shell [SHEL:US], a multinational oil and gas company, is facing allegations of greenwashing by, Follow This, a climate advocacy group, as reported by Bloomberg on February 1. The group has filed a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), claiming that Shell has misled investors about its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Follow This argues that the company’s public statements about its climate goals are inconsistent with its actual practices and that it has failed to adequately disclose the climate change risks posed to its business. The complaint cites several instances in which Shell has been criticized for its lack of progress on reducing emissions, including a 2020 report from the Transition Pathway Initiative that ranked the company as the worst of its peers in terms of climate transition.

In response to the accusations, Shell has emphasized its commitment to reducing emissions and its efforts to transition to a low-carbon business. The company has acknowledged the importance of addressing climate change and has confirmed the accuracy of its disclosure on its efforts in this area. According to the Washington Post, the outcome of this case could have significant implications for other energy companies, as well as for the broader financial industry and investors. The SEC has not yet issued a decision on the complaint, and it remains to be seen what the ultimate outcome will be. Nevertheless, the allegations against Shell serve to highlight the growing importance of transparency and accountability in the energy sector as the world shifts towards a low-carbon future.
