Türkiye’s Bold Climate Strategy Sets Global Standard for ESG and Carbon Neutral Action

As climate change intensifies, Türkiye has emerged as a global model for integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles with a forward-looking carbon neutral strategy. With 2024 recorded as the hottest year globally and extreme weather costing trillions, Türkiye’s position in the Mediterranean Basin makes it particularly vulnerable—prompting urgent and comprehensive climate action.

Türkiye ratified the Paris Agreement in 2021 and committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2053. It has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), pledging a 41% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To support this, a new Climate Law is underway, establishing a national emissions trading system to fund green technologies, carbon capture, and hydrogen energy projects. Locally, 89 sector-specific Climate Change Action Plans are in development, empowering provincial adaptation efforts.

Water scarcity, one of Türkiye’s most pressing climate challenges, is being addressed through its National Water Plan and initiatives like the EU-funded Water4All Doctoral Training Program. The program develops interdisciplinary water management expertise while supporting researchers from regions also facing water crises.

On the waste management front, Türkiye’s circular economy approach is reshaping sustainability. The Zero Waste Project has already reintegrated 27 million tons of waste and reduced plastic bag use by 80%. A national Green Taxonomy and the upcoming Türkiye Green Fund aim to channel investment into sustainable technologies.

Türkiye has also planted over 5 billion trees, significantly expanding forest cover and its carbon sink capacity—making it one of the few countries with increasing forested areas.

As Türkiye advances its ESG agenda, blending climate policy, renewable energy, and circular economy strategies, it demonstrates that climate resilience and economic opportunity can go hand-in-hand. With continued innovation and global cooperation, Türkiye’s climate roadmap serves as a scalable model for a sustainable future.
