Brazil and Norway Unveil Green Shipping Corridor Plan

Brazil and Norway have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a green shipping corridor between the two nations, advancing sustainable maritime transport and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The agreement, signed by Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, and Norwegian Ambassador Odd Magne Ruud, aims to promote low- and zero-carbon fuels in shipping while fostering international cooperation in sustainability.

The initiative aligns with global efforts such as the Clydebank Declaration for green maritime corridors, introduced at COP26, and supports Brazil’s broader sustainability goals under its Agenda for a More Sustainable Brazil. The collaboration will involve industry partners and research institutions to identify strategic routes, implement zero-emission fuels, and promote cleaner shipping technologies.

Brazil has been actively working toward sustainability in transportation. The Ministry of Ports and Airports recently introduced the country’s first sustainability policy for the logistics sector, encouraging companies to adopt ESG practices. This policy includes electrifying ports, using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and creating incentives for private sector sustainability commitments.

Despite its push for decarbonization, Brazil has opposed the global carbon levy on shipping proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The country argues that such a measure could harm exports from developing economies and increase global inequalities. However, with over 95% of its trade conducted by sea, Brazil remains a key player in shaping maritime sustainability policies.

The Brazil-Norway green shipping initiative will take center stage at COP30 in Belém later this year, where both nations plan to present a model for a transatlantic green shipping corridor. If successful, the project could position Brazil as a leader in the maritime energy transition, while also strengthening its trade ties with Norway and other global partners.
