The Group of Seven (G7) industrial countries have announced the International Guiding Principles for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a voluntary Code of Conduct for AI developers, as reported by Reuters on October 29. The International Guiding Principles, comprising of 11 points, is designed to provide guidance to organizations developing, deploying, and using advanced AI systems. These principles include commitments to mitigate risks, encourage responsible information sharing, reporting of incidents, investment in cybersecurity, and a labelling system for identifying AI-generated content. Additionally, the Code of Conduct will build on the 11 Guiding Principles and provide detailed and practical guidance for organizations developing AI.
In the face of the rapid development of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, G7 countries initiated the G7 Hiroshima Artificial Intelligence Process at a summit in Japan this May to establish global guardrails for advanced AI systems. The EU, as a G7 member, has been a frontrunner in AI legislation by introducing world’s first comprehensive AI law, the draft EU AI Act, in June. According to the European Commission, the recent Guiding Principles and the voluntary Code of Conduct will complement the legally binding rules that EU lawmakers being finalized by the EU lawmakers under the EU AI Act.
