UK Prime Minster Rishi Sunak has expressed his ambition for the United Kingdom to become the global hub for artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, as reported by Reuters on June 11. In a speech, Sunak emphasized his desire to make the UK both the intellectual and geographical home of global AI safety regulation. He aims to position the UK as the leader in AI regulation and intends to establish a global watchdog based in London. Sunak also stressed the need for swift action to ensure the UK retains its position as one of the world’s technology capitals.

Prior to unveiling this vision for global AI supervision, Sunak announced that the UK will host the first-ever global summit on AI regulation this autumn. During his meeting with the US President Joe Biden on June 8, Sunak secured the US’s involvement in the UK-hosted summit. Sunak highlighted that Britain is well-placed to lead the establishment of guidelines for this emerging technology and proposed the summit as an opportunity to discuss internationally coordinated regulation to mitigate risks. In addition, officials from the Group of Seven (G7) nations held their first meeting on May 30 to explore ways to promote AI. Participants ackonwleged the importance to promptly identifying the benefits and risks of generative AI, including technologies like ChatGPT. They also planned to continue discussions on how to protect copyright and combat the spread of false information.
