Japanese solar power system operator Advantec has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Philippines to provide renewable energy to over 30 factories and buildings in the Pampanga Economic Zone near Manila, as reported by Nikkei Asia on October 13. The solar power systems, generating 3.6 gigawatt-hours annually, will be installed on rooftops, with power supplied to factories by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). This move not only reduces carbon emissions but also aims to lower electricity costs by over 10% in a country where electricity prices are higher than in neighboring Southeast Asian nations.
Advantec plans to establish emergency backup power systems in the Philippines, leveraging its expertise in linking solar power generation, storage batteries, and energy management systems. This initiative, part of the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s public-private partnership promotion program, marks Advantec’s first venture in supplying renewable energy to factories abroad. PEZA Director General Tereso Panga praised the development, emphasizing the accessibility of clean, affordable energy sources for companies operating in the economic zone. The project aligns with the vision of building a smart city and enhancing resilience during emergencies, such as blackouts and natural disasters, in the Philippines.
