JTC Corporation, a statutory board under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, will require solar panels to be deployed for new land and land-based facility allocations, lease renewals, land launches, and tenders in all its estates, as reported by Strait Times on February 7. The new requirement, together with JTC’s previous effort to deploy solar panels on temporary vacant lots, is expected to produce more than 82 megawatt-peak (MWp) of solar power over the next two years, equivalent to 4% of Singapore’s solar target for 2030.
Singapore achieved its 2020 solar target of 350 MWp in the first quarter of 2020. The country, currently reliant on natural gas, aims for 2,000 MWp of annual solar energy output in 2030, sufficient to meet 3% of the country’s expected total electricity demand. As the management board that masterplans Singapore’s clean, green, and smart estates, JTC has since April 2020 mandated solar panel installations for all firms that meet certain criteria, such as those with contiguous rooftop space of over 800 square meters. In July 2020, the industrial developer also launched the SolarRoof program, providing discounted prices to the enterprises willing to rent solar panels or rental to those leasing out their roof spaces for solar panel installations, in a move to promote photovoltaic power use.
