Norway’s state-owned renewable power producer, Statkraft, has announced a substantial investment plan of up to EUR6bn (USD6.56bn), as reported by Reuters on January 8. The investment is earmarked for upgrading domestic hydro and wind power facilities, with a focus on doubling the current output from wind farms and enhancing the efficiency of hydro power plants. The initiative also involves the construction of new onshore wind farms, with an expected addition of around 3 terrawatt hours (TWh) of electricity output. The allocation of funds includes EUR1.8bn to EUR3bn for hydroelectric plant upgrades, EUR1.2bn to EUR2bn for the rehabilitation of older dams and plants, and approximately 1 billion euros for the renewal and construction of onshore wind farms. However, the successful execution of these projects is contingent on factors such as a stable regulatory framework, obtaining necessary concessions, monitoring power demand levels, and maintaining positive communication with local communities.
Norway, traditionally enjoying a surplus of electricity supply, is anticipating a shift as early as 2028 when increased demand from electrifying industries and transportation is expected to outpace new generation additions. Statkraft’s earlier plans for various projects were put on hold following the Norwegian government’s decision in 2022 to curb profits during Europe’s energy crisis. The company emphasizes that the realization of these ambitious plans hinges on a predictable regulatory environment, successful concession processes, adapting to evolving power demand, and fostering positive relationships with local communities.
