The UK plans to build powerlines after 2030 stretchingfrom northeast Scotland to northwest England for the transportation of electricity from new offshore wind farms, as reported by Bloomberg on March 19. The Electricity System Operator (ESO), responsible fordesigning and managing the UK’s power grid, projectedthat the new powerlines would cost GBP58bn (USD73.9bn) to build. The high-voltage transmission lines would be connected to 21 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind under construction off the coast of Scotland. The ESO favors overhead cables, which are cheaper and carry more electricity, over underground cables which are harder to maintain and have greater ecological and cultural impact during construction.
The substantial investments in high-voltage transmission lines accord with the growing need to harness renewable energy in the UK. Specifically, high-voltage systemshelp reduce power losses during long-distance power transmission from remote renewable sources to demand centers in urban areas. Additionally, they also incurfewer costs associated with conducting materials and transmission equipment. The UK government has committed to generating 95% of the country’s electricity from low-carbon sources by 2030. By then, the offshore wind power capacity is expected to reach 50 GW, more than tripling from 20222 levels. This ambitious target requires large-scale upgrades to cabling infrastructure. Apart from the longer-term plan beyond 2030, the government had earmarked GBP32bn (USD40.5bn) to connect 23GW of offshore wind by 2030.
