A collaboration between the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) and its Renewable Energy System Laboratory and Energy ICT Research Department has developed an innovative AI-powered approach to urban electrification, aimed at fostering carbon neutrality. This groundbreaking technology seeks to address the challenges of managing energy supply and demand in cities relying on renewable energy sources, such as building-integrated solar technology, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
One of the primary challenges of electrified cities is the variability in energy supply caused by changes in weather, leading to power grid instability, particularly during low-probability, high-impact events (LPHI) like heatwaves or cold snaps. To tackle this, KIER developed an AI-based energy management algorithm that optimizes energy sharing between buildings and stabilizes the grid.
In real-world applications, the AI-powered system delivered remarkable results, achieving a 38% energy self-sufficiency rate and a 58% self-consumption rate, far surpassing conventional methods. It also reduced electricity costs by 18% and significantly improved power grid stability.
By leveraging AI to analyze patterns in energy consumption and production, the system can better manage peak demand and respond to extreme weather events, paving the way for more sustainable urban energy solutions. This approach represents a significant advancement in achieving carbon-neutral cities and supporting global sustainability goals.
