India’s electric mobility solutions provider ETO Motors has reached an agreement with electricity distributors BSES Rajdhani Power, BSES Yamuna Power, and Tata Power  Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) to install 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Delhi National Capital Region (Delhi-NCR) over the next two to three years, as reported by the Economic Times on January 4. The charging stations will be installed around semi-public areas such as malls, workplaces, universities, and residential complexes. Over the next five years, ETO Motors also plans to install up to 10,000 EV charging stations in the Delhi-NCR. The company has already installed over 30 megawatts (MW) of EV charging stations within India.

Road transportation contributes to 87% of India’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector, with 70% of road transportation still relying on fossil fuels. The partnership between ETO Motors and electricity distributors came as India intends to boost the percentage of EVs in total passenger car sales to 30% and the share of electric two-wheelers to 40% by 2030. In February 2019, the Indian government announced the FAME-II plan to provide financial incentives for EV production and transportation infrastructure construction. As part of the scheme, the government intends to invest INR10bn (USD141m) in EV infrastructure and put 1m high-speed electric two-wheelers on the road by March 2022. As of the end of 2021, there were only 1,028 public EV charging stations installed throughout India.
