Indonesia has conducted its first commercial flight using palm oil-blended jet fuel, as reported by Reuters on October 27. The flight was operated by Garuda Indonesia [GIAA:IJ], the country’s flag carrier, using a Boeing 737-800NG aircraft. The blended fuel, containing 2.4% palm oil, was produced by the Indonesian state energy company PT Pertamina. Pertamina utilized hydro processed esters and fatty acid (HEFA) technology to refine bleached deodorized palm kernel oil, transforming it into an eco-friendly aviation fuel alternative. Compared to traditional fossil fuels, palm-based fuel offers a more environmentally friendly option by emitting fewer greenhouse gases. Prior to its use in commercial flights, this sustainable fuel had already been successfully employed to power Indonesia’s military aircraft, specifically the CN 250, in 2021.
Indonesia, being the world’s largest palm oil producer, has been actively exploring ways to integrate vegetable oils into fuels, aiming to reduce its reliance on crude oil imports. In February 2023, the country implemented the B35 biodiesel program, replacing the earlier B30 initiative. The B35 program mandates a blend of 35% palm oil and 65% fossil diesel in the transportation sector. Despite this, full implementation has faced challenges, including concerns about the potential impact of the fuel on engines. Furthermore, Indonesia had previously enforced a 3% biofuel blending requirement for jet fuel by 2020; however, its implementation faced delays. With the successful launch of this commercial flight using palm-based fuel, Indonesia is advocating for palm oil to be recognized as an eligible feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, further advancing the country’s efforts towards eco-friendly aviation practices.
